So we celebrated el grito on the 15th but the actual anniversary of Mexican independence is September 16th. I spent Friday in the "pueblo mágico" of Cholula in the state of Puebla. This is the city known to have one church (really chapels) for each day of the year (365 total). It is not far from magical at all.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, San Andrés Cholula, Puebla. A magnificent 16th-century church built atop a pyramid. We had to practically climb up there, but boy, was it worth it.
That view though! (No, I don't mean the pretty ladies posing, but thanks for thinking so.)
I learned there is a tradition of a family member running a candle over a person's body in this holy place to free them from any bad spirits. It reminds me of the waters of baptism. Beautiful.
I couldn't take photos inside the church, but it was breathtaking, of course.
Oh, I also had my first Mexican mezcal experience (with chili and lime), which was a fun way to celebrate independence. ;)
