On Sunday, November 27th, I had the honor and privilege of getting to accomplish one of my biggest life goals: seeing Our Lady of Guadalupe in person for the very first time. It was sort of unplanned--my roommates and I were visiting friends in CDMX over the weekend and Ashlyn and I were to leave Sunday, but once I saw a window of opportunity, I decided I could wait no longer.
Ashlyn and I took the metro to the Basilica (I LOVE CDMX TRANSPORTATION!) and arrived to a busy, crowded market place on a hot, Sunday morning. There were so many people at the Basilica when we arrived, but it was a lot of fun. We inserted ourselves in the throng of people migrating to see the Virgin, and once we finally arrived underneath the framed tilma, there was a human conveyor belt (as I like to call it) that allowed no one to dilly-dally.
I was expecting her to be a lot bigger and for some reason I anticipated being a lot closer to the image. It looked exactly like all the images I had seen in the past. But it was still magical, knowing that it was *THE* Guadalupana.
We attended a standing-room only Mass and then decided to go see Our Lady again. Ashlyn later joked that it was like a ride at DisneyLand: the wait was long but we both said, "Let's go again!"
After saying goodbye to the Basilica, we explored the rest of the Tepeyac complex, which included the Capilla de Indios which formerly housed the image of the Blessed Virgin, as well as the Capilla del Cerrito where the miracle of the flowers occurred, and the Templo Expiatorio a Cristo Rey, the Old Basilica.
It's certainly an experience I'll never forget. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ruega por nosotros.
